The gig I’m working on at the moment has swung into high gear and is absorbing the majority of my time and attention. The team I’m on is making progress toward our outcome and I’m learning a lot about how product teams can address with a variety of situations that will inevitably come their way.
With my attention focused on the product I’m working on, I still find myself occasionally looking forward to the time when I’ll have a chance to get away from it all and share what I’ve learned with other product people or get their insight on how to deal with certain situations.
Yep, that’s right. Even though I’m an introvert, I do look forward to having the chance to talk to other people with similar interests. I just have to make sure I allow some downtime while I’m at those gatherings.
So this week I wanted to highlight the events I’m planning to attend this fall and a couple of local groups that provide somewhat regular opportunities to get together with other product people. If you happen to be at one of these events or attending one of these local groups, let me know. I’d love to chat in person.
INDUSTRY The Product Conference
Cleveland, Ohio September 23 – 25, 2019
INDUSTRY is put on by the folks at Product Collective (Full disclosure, I curate the tips newsletter for Product Collective) and focuses on all things product. It features a day of workshops on Monday the 23rd and then general sessions on 24 – 25. I attended this conference last year and found it a great way to meet other product people from a wide range of industries and hear from a wide range of practitioners. Plus, the organizers take notes for you and release them in an ebook shortly after the event.
Des Moines, Iowa October 18, 2019
I help organize this one day event in Des Moines on behalf of Agile Iowa so I may be a little biased in saying it will have an excellent program. Our purpose for the event is to give people in Des Moines who are trying to work in an agile manner a chance to get together, hear how others are doing it, and share their own experiences. We’re in the process of finalizing the program and are putting up information about the speakers and their topics as we get that info in. Tickets go on sale August 1st and we’ve sold out every previous event, so keep an eye on dsmAgile.Agileiowa.org for more information.
Building Business Capability
Fort Lauderdale, Florida November 11 – 15, 2019
BBC is an annual event that attracts business analysts from around the world. I’ve presented at the event several times before and am doing so twice again this year – a workshop on Monday and a session on Thursday. It’s a good place to find out what other business analysts are up to, and a convenient way to convince other business analysts that they’re product people too.
Product Tank (Des Moines/Ames)
Des Moines or Ames
Yes, you saw that right! The Des Moines/Ames area has a local version of the international Product Tank group. The group gets together roughly every other month and gives product people from the Des Moines and Ames area a chance to share ideas and hear from other product people. Keep an eye on the Product Tank Des Moines/Ames meetup page for more information about upcoming gatherings.
IIBA Central Iowa
Des Moines, Iowa metro area Monthly meetings
The Central Iowa chapter of the International Institute of Business Analysts (IIBA) is one of the most established and most active IIBA chapters. (And I’m not just saying that because it’s my hometown chapter). The group has monthly meetings that regularly attract ~100 attendees and great speakers (ok, maybe a little bias in that statement) ongoing programs and put on a yearly development day in the spring. IIBA Local Chapters are a great way to catch up with what other BA’s are doing in your local area. The Des Moines chapter is no exception.
